Isn't that about the equivalent of coating it in tar?
That stuff is also heavy.
If your going to make a real boat, then build it the old fashioned way, built a skeleton, then fill the seams, and paint. The wood will swell and seal itself to an extent.
If you want a cheap fishing boat, just build a section of deck out of pressure treated lumber and trap four 55 gallon barrels underneath. Seal the bungs and it will hold a ton or more.
A buddy had a bunch of floating dock sections built years ago, then used a trolling motor each year to get them in place. He often disconnected the last section and went fishing on it. It would hold about 8 people and was rock solid stable.
