Re: Economy

I just read that link. What a crock.

I'll give one example (the same one you gave in fact) "The government considers someone “employed” if they work as little as one hour a week." What hat did they pull this out of?

Re: Economy

do yopu copunt the millions that work at fast food and wally world type jobs that dont pay a living wage and dont normally schedule a full 40 hours so if they have to call you in there is no overtime?
thats about all there is here unless your a lawyer or a Dr or retired and moved here to mess up our wonderful part of the world.
I wnt to see employment figgures with jobs that pay a decent living wage with some health and dental bennies.
back in the 80's I was a lead man in the CNC production dept of an explosive manufacturing plant. I made 10 dollars an hour and had half arsed medical. the VP of the company was an idiot yet he made 38 dollars an hour and was rarely there.
company went belly up finnaly. but it was funny that we went from 85 machinists to 3 of us yet there were no cuts in management.
two years later it was all gone gone.

Off topic - That hideously ugly dog was named Sam, three time winner of the Santa Barbara Ugly Dog Contest. True story: when Sam was set up on the table before the judges, they recoiled in disgust, pulling their hands to their chests, and were nauseated by the sight of the critter. I’m told he has a minor part in the movie ‘Dead Alive’, but I’ve never seen it.

Sam passed away last November. He had a lot of ailments, was basically a deformed, blind, Chinese Crested, one of those My Little Pony looking dogs. Here’s what he would have looked like if he were heathy:

http://www.dogbiz.com/dogs-grp5/chinese-crested/images/chinese-crested-280x235-tig-128.gif

Good news!!! Sam’s owner was able to acquire a similarly disgusting pooch, Cupcake, shortly before Sam’s passing. So we should be blessed with more ugly dog pix, and hopefully a new winner of the Ugly Dog Contest that was just as deserving as Sam.

Ok, back on topic.

Re: Economy

A couple of intersting things do effect unemployment.
1. When you run out of unemployment eligblity you fall off the count.
2. Part time and minimum wages jobs count in the numbers. So if you live in a college town where lots of students work as waiters etc. it will drive the unemployment % down as they count as jobs but when not working do not count as unemployed.
3. Like any other statistic the calculations can be used to show whatever you like. Would be nice to have standards but that is a dream.

Re: Economy

where I live there are plenty of semi permanent jobs and construction jobs and jobs in the fishing industry but none that pay much over 10-12 an hour and typically about 8 dollars an hour.not much industry about here as its a resort area anymore.
but most the construction jobs fall into about a day labor type job and resteraunts and tourist trap type stores tend to be shuttered from oct to may so those without jobs are not counted as unemployed once the unemployment checks,if actually eligible, run out.

Re: Economy

Suspect that most of the fast food and wallyworld type employees are being paid about all they are worth and no amount of raises or benefits will increase their productivity or value to the company or its bottom line. Working in Paradise or Hades does have its ups and downs such as low pay, great or poor working conditions, great or inclement weather etc.. To really make it working age people need to prepare for needed occupations and move where job vacancies exist. And in a lot of good paying jobs the" hiring now" sign is out but not in all neighborhoods. As was mentioned earlier the financial and credit card companies are sapping the life out of countless working people who were lured into their web through deceptive and unscruplous practices that should be illegal. A lot of jobs are ideally filled by students. Others who choose these jobs as a career are destined to be poorly rewarded.
