effects of using different oil

I have read different posts where we should use TC-W3 oil to mix with gas. But how would using the standard 2 cycle oil effect an outboard? Will there be a difference in performace?

Also I have a '69 Johnson, 6hp that I have been mixing at 24-1 and recently was told I can run it 50-1 ratio. Is there any ill effects runing it at the wrong ratio?

Thanks,
Gary

The newer TW-3 oil's are rated to be cleaner burning for one thing, you can find it anywhere, so just use that. Your 69, 6 HP is a roller bearing engine, so 50-1 should be fine.

Re: effects of using different oil

TC-W3 oil has an ashless detergent that does not hold up in hot-running (air cooled) engines. Two cycle oil for hotter running engines has at least some of the detergent that is not ashless in order to protect against the heat. Non-ashless detergent in an outboard eventually leaves deposits that cause ring sticking and combustion chamber deposits.

Your '69 is designed and approved for 50:1. Running 24:1 won't hurt it, just wasteful and more goop discharged into the environment.

FWIW
I can't remember where but I recently read that the TCW-3, compared with TCW-2 and earlier specs is biodegradable.

Supposed to biodegrade 80% in 20 days (or was it 20% in 80 days)
