2003 frontier with 25,000 miles Check engine soon light came on. Obd reads the egr valve. My mechanic says take it to the dealer all emissions related problems are covered for five years 50,000 miles by federal law. Dealer says that it is 3/36,000 and is considered a maintenance issue. My mechanic says they are yanking my chain. Any thoughts?

Federal Emissions Warranty
The Federal Emissions Warranty guidelines are based on federal regulations and apply to vehicles in all 50 states. Vehicles are covered by two types of emissions control system warranty, "Emission Defect Warranty" and "Emissions Performance Warranty".

Depending on the state you live in, the Performance Warranty is for 3 years/50,000 miles. The Defect Warranty is generally consistent with the manufacturer's bumper-to-bumper warranty with certain parts (catalytic converter and electronic emissions controls (PCM)) for up to 8 years/80,000 miles. Please refer to your owner's manual for your exact emissions warranty.

Get into the owners manual or warranty booklet. Contact Nissan and ask to speak with a Nissan Tech rep too.

Well now that they have described the warranty time. Don't see how it would be a maintenance issue though. Is the EGR listed in the maintenance section of the owners manual?
Call the factory, some dealers like to double bill (you first then the factory) for stuff like this. Remember the dealer repair shop is a repair shop "OWNED" by the dealer "NOT" the factory (some people either don't know or forget this).

BTW here is the EPA warranty description.

Re: egr valve Nissan Fontier

Thanks for the link. That was very useful information. It looks like I am responsible. I have one more question. My father in law who is a union mechanic says that the aftermarket egr valves are junk and won't last. He said not to take it to the local mechanic but let the dealer do it. Which equals more money. Any body have any experiences with aftermarket egr's or any other thoughts. Oh and by the way don't tell my father in law that I am questioning him.

You can specify to your local tech that he use factory parts. Unless there is a very high failure rate your not going to find a lot of after market parts for vehicles that are less than 5 or 6 years old anyway.

BTW there is a series of tests that need to be run before replacing the EGR on any vehicle to find out "WHY" the valve is not operating, especially the Nissans. One reason we never installed customer supplied parts and always ran scan checks and diagnostics ourselves when I worked on cars.

what does egr valve have to do with emission system? I thought it just control the amount of air going into the engine.

Re: egr valve Nissan Fontier

EGR- Exhaust Gas Recirculation reduces emissions by feeding some of the exhaust gas back through the engine at certain times. It also reduces NOx emissions by keeping the combustion chamber temperatures below 2500 degrees.

What controls the idle speed is usually referred to as an IACV (Idle Air Control Valve) that meters the air to the engine when the throttle is closed. There is also an IACS where the S stands for solenoid such as what Ford uses.
