My 69 johnson 40 keeps melting shift wires, head is cool to the touch, also I have a cowling full of smoke. Are these related? where is a good place to start looking for the exhaust leak?

smoke is probably from melting insulation. find the short. has someone removed a fuse? the engine usually run bad when the exhaust leaks into the cowl. the don't like poluted air either.
