Re: Electric Ignition

You can find some here on IBoats, but I think they were all Ignitor's when I looked a year or two ago. Since I wanted an Ignitor II and matching coil for my boat, I had to look elsewhere and found what I wanted at vintageperformance.com

Nothing wrong with the Ignitor, I just wanted the adaptive dwell and really wanted the protection circuit. If you leave the key on/engine off with the Ignitor, it can burn out. The Ignitor II will shut itself off, but is $30 more. I also replaced my old Mercruiser coil (16k volts I think) with a shiney new 40k volt one.

Re: Electric Ignition

Jason B, did you have any problems with tachometer readings when you changed to the electronic ignition?

http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=24;t=009962#000000

See above link for more on this topic. It includes discussion as well as info/ links regarding the mod needed w.r.t. the ESA module for a Cobra.

Plus note seahorses post that states: "See a Johnson/Evinrude dealer. The conversion kit is listed in the dealer's Parts and Accessory Catalog in the Stern Drive section. The kit installs quickly and includes a new shift assist module."

If you check out that option please post back with info on what you find. I also have a 4.3L cobra, and while not able to afford a conversion at this time, would be interested down the road in a solution that includes a new ESA module (and presumably, one that doesn't require the ESA workaround needed for the pertronix).

Re: Electric Ignition

KWoolard, Yup. my tach reads ok until about 3k rpm. It stops at 32-3400. i still run the same speed as I did when the tach read 4200 before the upgarde so I know everything is running right. Pertronix suggested I build one of their esa modules and hook it to the tach and see if it helps. I have the module built, but haven't tried it out yet.
