The motor is a Johnson 40 hp 1970 electric shift. This is what it is doing. sometime when you put it in foward the rpm's will increase but the boat does not go. You can put it in reverse and it will back up. You can then put it back in foward and it normally will then go. Last night while trying to load the boat it would not go foward at all. After getting it out of the lake I put the shifter in foward and there was no resistance. I truned the key on and it would free wheel going in the foward direction but would lock up if you tried to turn the prop like it would be going in reverse. The lower end grease was replaced at the boat place and the correct grease was put in the unit since it takes a certain kind.
Thanks for your help.

dennis

Re: electric shift Problem 1970 40hp

It's normal, when in gear (either gear), that the propeller will slip in one direction and grab in the other.

It sounds like that at times the proper 12 volts is not being applied to the forward gear electric clutch/magnet.

At the powerhead, hook up a volt meter to the green wire (forward) that leads to the lower unit, then check the voltage.
