Does anyone know how early Johnson or E-Rude made either an electric start 10HP or a retrofit electric start 10HP I have a 1946 centruy that I use a 1956 30HP Johnson, but most lakes around me have a 10 HP limit. The bench seats on the boat make pull starting a pain.

Re: Electric Start 10 HP. How Early?

The earliest 10hp you'll find with an electric start is the 1974 9.9hp model.

The 9.5hp from '64 to '73 simply doesn't have the room to add anything, and the 10hp models prior to that don't have enough in common with their larger 15/18 hp brethern to make the conversion.

I actually saw a guy who had a series of pulleys that allowed him to pull start his motor from the front seat. He had a knot in the starter rope at the motor that would allow for enough slack for the motor to turn for steering. He would get into the boat and pull the choke. Then he would climb into the front seat and pull start the motor. Upon starting he would tap the choke in with a stick (I think it was a cane). Once the motor was warmed up it restarted fairly easily without the choke. If I recall, it was a '56 or '57 10hp Johnson that he had this contraption tied into....

Hope that helps.

- Scott
