Does anyone know if a manual start Johnson FD 18F can be converted to an electric start?

Yes it can. You need a starter, starter bracket, solenoid, and wiring. If you don't have a toothed flywheel, you'll need one of those too. You may want an electric choke if you're converting to remote. Have a look at Iboats member geekomatic's pictures of his earlier 18hp to get an idea:
Photo album, click here.

Hi,

That's a 1964 18 hp Johnson. They came in electric start versions, so it's certainly possible.

Depending on your motor's flywheel, you may have to get a flywheel with the starter gears on it. You can tell by pulling the cover. If you see teeth on the edge of the flywheel, you're set.

Best bet for finding the starter, brackets, etc. will be eBay or an outboard wrecking yard like Twin Cities Outboard (Google them). The solenoid for these starters is mounted outboard of the engine, so you'll need to figure something out for that as well. (any 12-volt external solenoid will be adaptable).

You might check local outboard shops and see if they have a junked 18 hp electric start motor. I think the starter stuff was the same for several years on that engine.

Right now, there's a toothed flywheel for a 1964 Johnson 18 hp on eBay. Go to eBay and search for "Johnson 18." It'll be on the first page, and there are some other parts from the same seller.
