Probably doing this the wrong way round as I've already bought the parts - currently they are in UK customs somewhere...

Anyhow, I recently bought a 1989 Four Winns Liberator 201 with 350 OMC King Cobra stern drive. On my second occasion out the engine stopped leaving me a drift at sea, albeit for 5 minutes. It had been running fine for the last hour. My friend poked the HT leads and we restarted without issue, but it left a worry in my mind I didn't like.

Not many after market parts available here in the UK for these boats but found a reference to electronic ignition from Doug at aaamarine.com via ebay. Doug kindly identified the engine after I sent him some photos and recommended their replacement distributor with built in coil, new ht leads, esa module for electronic ignition and the high volume flame arrester.

I'm hoping this will resolve my ignition problems and maybe give me better performance and fuel economy. I'm just wondering if anybody here has tried the same and if the results were as good as they were expecting. To be honest this is my first boat and I've only spent 3 hours in her in a choppy sea so will have nothing to compare it against.

Foolishly I didn't realise just how much fuel a 350 with 4 barrel rochester carb could drink. Not as bad as some engines you folks have but here in the UK fuel prices are currently ?1.40 / litre, so providing my maths is right that's about $8.59 / gallon (US). To get it into perspective how many miles to the gallon would this engine do if it were in a car?

Depends on how hard you would drive it? 12 to 17 mpg.

So far it's been at half throttle for about 3 hours. The sea was choppy so probably not the most economical method but my rule of thumb is around 3mpg. I was hoping for around 10. So far shes consumed 70 litres for those 3 hours. do you think something is wrong regarding fuel mixture, or anything else for that matter?

If memory serves me right, thats ruffly 35.0 U.S. Gallons witch breaks down to 11.7 gallons and hour. Any idea how many miles or kilometers you traveled?

35 maybe? To be honest it was a few weeks back and it's hard to tell on water. Just comparing it if I did it in the car. Think I'll just have to accept that 4-barrell carb = funnel. Hey-ho, thanks for your response.

A boat that size with a 5.7 Liter engine and a 4bbl carb is going to use gas no matter what you do, but there are things you can do to make it more econmical. One is to find someone who knows how to tune up a points ignition system, I'd keep the points because while they need maintenance, once you know how they work it's VERY simple to keep them working well, no electronic mystery boxes to fail with no replacement right when you need it. All my first cars had points so I am very familiar with them, and while electronic ignition of course is better, like I said if you can't get replacement parts you are SOL. After market stuff sometimes is not as available as we would like... The other is to make sure the boat bottom and drive are clean, that makes a huge difference. Finally the Rochester Quadrajet 4 bbl is a good carb for economy provided you run the boat at the point before the secondaries open because the primary bores are small and they can actually do better on gas than a 2 bbl carb.
