Electronic Ignition Module is melted..?

Chrysler 105hp Outboard
Model # 1059 HF or 1059 HD
Serial # 14018

My problem is the electronic ignition module looks like it has melted. Can this be from sitting out in the heat, manufacturer, or overheating, or a short?

I am reluctant to just replace and go. What should I look for?

Also, can I replace it wit ha standard coil system or does it need to be specific to this motor?

You are talking about the Motorola, Finned aluminum, black box, right? If so, these units were "potted" or sealed with a non removeable compound to protect them from moisture.

There is a LOT of power going through these boxes and they do develop some heat. I have seen one or two melted like you describe and still function. It is not from sun heat and is not necessarily a reason to replace the unit.

However: even if yours is still functioning, I would start looking for a reasonably priced replacement now before it decides to crap out. Insurance and piece of mind.

You can retrofit the engine back to points and coil unless you have the electric eye distributor. (Electronic dist. has two wires coming from the dist., points -one) Then, the dist. shaft, rotor and eye need to be replaced. If you do retro fit be sure to use a 12 volt coil. But really--electronic ignition is better.

There is a post here from a guy in South Africa--I forget the name of the post but the last reply was only a few days ago at most.
