I recently came into posession of an old Elgin outboard.
Model number is 581 58791. What year is it?
Also, it will not stay in neutral. how can that be fixed?
Can I still get parts for it?BTW it is a 7 1/2 hp.

Re: Elgin outboard

I believe that is a 571-58791, 59 7.5 special value motor. Built by West Bend which became Chrysler circa. 65.
Don't know if this will help."adjust shift rod coupling so gear shift control rod is in the horizontal position in neutral". (Gear shift rod is attached to the top of the vertical shift rod). Coupling is behind swivel bracket below the power head.

Re: Elgin outboard

My diagnosis is the neutral notch in the shifter cam and/or the shift plunger in the prop shaft is worn. The shifter cam is in the nose of the lower unit gearcase and doubles as the detent for shifting "feel", as well as being what moves the clutch dog between the gears.

Think "Chrysler" when looking for parts.

Re: Elgin outboard

Thanks ever so much.
Any idea of what this motor is worth?
