Re: ELTO 5.5 or 5 hp?

aomci.org is your best source. I had no luck with those numbers. One thing I know for sure, no Elto ever used 50:1, probably 16:1 (8oz/gal). Roughly 1921-29. Service Manuals? Doubtful. ;) Elto came before OMC. Just before.

By golly, I see up to 1949 in the sparkplug chart. Almost all used a .025 plug gap. 1930 would be the first year for OMC Elto's.

Carb gummed up again or the screen on the tank valve did.

Hey, not a problem. Eltos were made in Canada, same as Gales of US, up to and even after 1963 when Gale production stopped. Model number are basically the same. So your Elto is a 1957, same as a 1957 Gale Buccaneer, different paint and decals. Many but not all parts are the same as those other OMC motors. You may have heard of the Evinrude and Johnsons.

Copies of original factory literature available from Ken Cook Co. If he doesn't have the Elto, just get the Buccaneer.

Points .020, Plugs .030, fuel mix 24:1, (might have originally been 16:1 but they changed it)

Like all OMC motors built in 1957, it is guaranteed to have bad coils unless they have already been replaced. That is why it won't run. Fix the ignition and you will be amazed at what a great motor it is. Better put in a water pump impeller once you know it will run. You have to pull the powerhead to do that.

Re: ELTO 5.5 or 5 hp?

I learned something new today. I never knew Canada had their own version of a Gale using the Elto name. Thanks FR. :)
