I replaced an exhaust system on my old '83 Dodge and failed the emissions test the next day.I am certain that it would have passed before that.Something about heating the new pipe I suppose.Ron G

Double check to see if it has an EGR valve or not. Which 1992 Olds are you talking about?

Well ...Ron was close ...the new cat was part of it...I told the lady to throw some hi test in it and go on a 20 mile cruise before the e-test...instead her husband took it to the corner Shell station and put in their nitrogen enhanced hi test then drove it five blocks to the test place.....That gas and a cold new cat was the cause of the increased NOx numbers ....3 days later after running out the nitrogen enhanced hi test and getting the cat real hot before the test it came out with like new car numbers...So that gas is good for cleaning but real bad for the test

Re: Emissions good one

In Vancouver they have emission tests on all cars every couple of years. In the early years cars were failed all of the time because of the long waiting lines and people shutting of the cars while they are waiting. The cats are cold by the time they get in for the test and they fail. It's a known fact now,if you have an older car you fill up with ethanol gas and make sure the cat is good and hot and your chances of passing are quite a bit better. It would be interesting to retest that olds with the nitrogen gas and a hot cat.

We have them every 2 years here in Ontario also...I have being told from quite a few sources now to use the nitrogen enhanced gas long before the test just to clean the carbon and other deposits out ....But to make sure you don't have any in for the test as you will fail forsure...thats from guys that do the tests for a living...they have seen it all and know better

They used to have signs in the parking lot telling people to turn off their cars when they were waiting in the line. I don't live out there now,and don't know if they are still there, but they caused a lot of failures and expensive trips to get things repaired that never needed any work.

Re: Emissions good one

Thank god our fearless gubmint leaders here in the Wisconsin had the testicular fortitude to eliminate the expensive and cumbersome drive simulator emission testing on pre OBD-II cars (pre 1996)
The WISDOT was spending a ton of money maintaining and operating the wheel dynos and gas anylyzers for a minimal amount of cars with less and less on the roads every year. The new cars are merely a code scan and if your car is in good working order you pass right through.
The fact that OBD-II is extremely tunable and that entire emission monitors can be eliminated from the operating strategy is icing on the cake.
