Eng. make/size ?

!976 Model 2500 25' Cruisers Mercruiser outdrive. Says 240 on drive the old reg. says it has a 235hp engine. Can't get into engine compartment right now due to snow ice in cockpit. Can the make/engine size be determined by the hull # ? Or, does anyone know what that paticular boat came with? Ford, GM ? 302/305/351/? Any opinions? thanks

Never heard of a 240 outdrive, none listed in the parts catalog or service manual either. Might want to run out in the snow and have another look.

How about a 230? I couldn't remember which side by 5 it was on by the HP of 235 thats statesd on the Registration.. Must be 230 Don.

No 230 drive either.

HUH? I know it had a Merc brand sticker on the face of the drive that had 230 or 240. Can't make it out in the pics. I saw it when i looked at the boat. I'll get more info Don. Going to call him tomorrow and see how he's doing on the ice/snow melting progress. What engine was clasified as 235hp stock? 1976 Merc era

Ayuh,...

I believe that would be the 351W Ford,+ probably a Mod.1 drive....

Yup, pics would go a long way here.
Any other clues in the meantime...do you know if the tops of the valve covers are flat or round? Distributor in back or front? Color? # of cylinders?

Yeah i know, I just talked to the guy where the boat is and he's going to open her up today and get me some info/#s, Thanks. All i could find listed for a ford for 1976 was the 888 which is the 302. Ha, we'll see.

That's very possible. You're in the right HP range for a small block V8.

Seems to me it would be a 302 rather than a 351 if the gm 350s are 260ish the 351 should be closer to that than 235hp we'll see, thanks

Maybe i'm assuming, I just looked up the 302 5.0 and it was 166hp the 351 5.8 was 233 hp. interesting. i'll have to wait and see when he calls me later tody i guess. thanks

Sorry. The 302s were 188hp. Mercruiser called them 888. The 5.8s were the 235ish hp.

The 305 Chevy was called an 898 for 198hp. And yep, the 350s were 260hp.

I guess the Chevies are just more powerful?

Yeah i saw that too. I knew the 888s were 302s but was unshure of the hp. I may have the 351 then. Being a 25' boat i'd presume it would/should have atleast a 200+ hp engine.
