I've read some good posts here on aligning the engine - mercruiser I/O and will be following that advice.

Question is, before I raise/lower the engine from the front - should I not back off the rear mount bolts to allow some movement without snapping something?

Thx!!!

If you have to ask that, maybe you shouldn't be working on your stuff. Some things are just obvious.

Re: Engine Align

i leave the rear mouning bolts torqued to the proper torque spec. if you adjusted the front mounts while the rear mounts loose you wont get it aligned properly because lets say you got the front mount to where the aligntment bar slides in and out properly then you torque the rear engine mounts it can throw off the alignment

Re: Engine Align

Thanks Boat127 - I appreciate the appropriate reply.

It's like we teach our kids... if you can't say something nice or helpful..... the rest is "obvious"

This is why I wasn't too sure - throw the alignment vs torquing the rear mount.

Obviously I won't be raising the engine to a far degree - but is there anything else here I need to watch out for?

Re: Engine Align

i would check the condition of the engine mounts, the coupler gimbal bearing as well all the bellows and u-joints while the drive is off. put some grease on the end of the alignment bar before you stick it in then when you pull it out you can see the spline impressions from the coupler.

Re: Engine Align

The rear mount bolts consist of a fiber washer and a spring. Take it from there

Re: Engine Align

The rear mounts are rubber and can take quite a bit of movement.

Re: Engine Align

You should not be moving the the front of the engine much to begin with. Half a turn on the nut can make a difference in getting a good pattern on the alignment bar or not.
