New gimbal bearing /bellows / shift cable install.... 05 mercruiser 5.0 liter alpha 1 gen 2......
I am checking the engine alignment I had heavy marks at the top and nothing or very lt at the bottom and the alignment tool was hard to insert. I checked the gimbal bearing and it appears to be seated properly. I adjusted my mounts by lowering them and I have marks on the top / port side ( top and port seem heavy marked) and lower , however the marks on the starboard side are very very light. I'm guessing I was probably off a little on the starboard side as I counted ( difficult to track due to fuel filter ). The tool is going in very easy and I have spun the crank shaft to 4 different positions. I seated the gimbal bearing by lt tap in four directions..Before I go any further I was hoping for a suggestion on adjusting .... Thank you

I see your method is working fine. just finished re-aligning for my new install. The best method is slow and steady, and yes there is to many climbing in and out of the boat to check. Move the mounts no more then a quarter turn at a time when you start getting close. Appears you are close. What I do is shove the tool in and then bump the toll with my hand on all sides, then rotate it a few times back and forth, then remove and reinsert. You can feel when your close and don't look so much at the marks left behind on the tool. Your since if feel is much better. If you can slide it in with light pressure (two fingers) and remove with about the same your there

Exactly... also if you installed a new grease seal then they can add some friction resistance to the feel of the tool on it's way in and out.
