I have a 1973 Johnson 3cyl 65 Hp. That finally gave up the ghost. Botton piston skirt broke up locking it up. I disassembled and cleaned up block and head ordered new piston and rings and gaskets. Problem is the new piston are for a commercial application. Beefer skirts and bigger wrist pins. Found Wrist Pin bearings to take care of that. My question is will this have a big effect on engine balance. Cant find out if the Commercial flywheel is the same as the regular engine flywheel. I going to try it any way just to see, but thought I would ask. since I'm new to this forum.

Re: Engine Balance

Very interesting question, Bobby.

In theory the commercial piston would be heavier and would cause imbalance, but theory doesn't always stand up in real world applications.

I have done many things to small engines that theory said would not work. Many of the engines didn't know the theory and worked anyway. Others knew theory and didn't work.

Joe Reeves will probably have a better answer for you. He will be along soon.

Meanwhile, welcome to the Forum.

Good luck. :)

Re: Engine Balance

Autotech
Great post for your first. You got the Year, Brand, and HP. Good description of what your problem was and what you have done to fix it. Then your question is clear. Your's may be the best first post ever. I do not know your answer but just wanted to say Welcome Aboard.

Autotech

I would call the customer service department of the piston manufacturer and ask them that question.

Good Luck,

Gold Bear ;)

Autotech

Can you return the parts and check with an OMC dealer for the right ones?

Joe Reeves on this board is an OMC guru, maybe he can chime in?

Good Luck,

Gold Bear ;)

Re: Engine Balance

If you haven't, you might check out Wiseco and Pro Marine to see if they have a replacement piston.

c/6

Hooty

Re: Engine Balance

Wiseco makes a replacement, part# 3115P? ? being standard or whatever oversize up to .040. You have to also use their wrist pin bearing B1029.

Where did you get your current piston, and what is the part number? I doubt its for a 73.

Re: Engine Balance

My Napa part #is 18-4124 which is a standard piston 3" bore. The original Wrist Pins were 5/8" and the replacements piston have Wrist Pins are 3/4" thus the need for the extra wrist pin bearing set. So Iam wondering if the weisco pistons 3115p used with the B1029 bearing are exactly what I have.
Don't guess there is any way to find that out though?
thanks

Re: Engine Balance

Pro Marine Parts makes pistons that work with the old style small wrist pins for the 3 banger engines.

Re: Engine Balance

The 18-4124 is for a mid 80's commercial 65. Sierra doesnt offer a piston for the 73. I had a feeling thats what they did for you. NAPA needs to stay out of the boat parts business. They stink at it!

You can get the correct piston from the link, or where ever else you prefer.

Re: Engine Balance

AutoTech....Unfortunately that 1973 65hp model is a tough one to locate parts for at times. I checked over my remaining stock and sorry to say, I don't have any of the items that you mention.

The head planing thing..... you can use a thick piece of flat glass (they're usually perfectly smooth and flat), or some other known perfectly flat surface. Lay a sheet of 220 wet or dry sandpaper on it, wet it down with mineral spirits and work the head on it in a figure 8 motion. If the head is just ever so slightly off, that will take care of it. If it's obvious that it's warped bad, the machine shop would be the route to go. A word of caution.... if too much material is taken off, the compression will increase to a point whereas pre-ignition may occur, which will result in a melted piston.

According to my books, the 1973 65hp Evinrude parts as listed below are still available. This may be in error but the books say otherwise... at any rate, I'll list them for your reference. Note that the std and 020 pistons come with the standard (original 5/8" size) wrist pin, wrist pin clips, and piston rings.

OMC Original & Superceeded Part Numbers:

Std Piston-386251 -approx $150.00 (with rings etc)
.020 Piston-386257-approx $160.00 (with rings etc)
.030 Piston-386260-approx $123.00

Std Ring Set - 385807 - 396377 approx $33.00
.020 Ring Set - 385808 - 396378 approx $30.00
.030 Ring Set - 385809 - 396379 approx $33.00

Std (Regular) Wrist Pin Bearing - 378251 Approx $25.00 (For 5/8" dia w/pin)
-------------------------------------------
I don't know who handles "Wiseco" pistons in your area, but I do business with Precision Mfg in Clearwater, Fl. Their "Tech Service" phone is 1-813-442-4025, with their fax number being 1-813-446-1163.

Wiseco's Tech Assistance Number is:

1-440-951-6600

You'll have to check with them for their latest prices.

The Wiseco pistons includes the wrist pin, wrist pin retainers, and piston rings. However, the catch is that you must use the 3/4" wrist pin bearing to accommodate the larger wrist pin. The wrist pin is included with the piston as mentioned above.

Wiseco Piston Bores & Part Numbers

3.00" - Std - # 3015PS
3.020 - .020 - # 3015P2
3.030 - .030 - # 3015P3
3.040 - .040 - # 3015P4

Wrist Pin Bearing Conversion Kit

Old #WP15-1 - - - - New #B1029
------------------------------
Whether this info will be of use to you or not, I wish you luck with your engine.

Note that the difference in weight will not affect your engine balance. I've went this route many times and always had a smooth running engine when finished.

Joe
I know I am new to this forum but I got to tell you I'am throughly impressed. You have to be dedicated to sit down and list all that for me. No wonder everybody said just wait on Joe.I convinced I got the wrong pistons now. Will call your folks after the Holidays. Thanks again for all your help :) .As for the head work I had that done in the machine shop at the school where I teach. Didnt need much to level it out.

Re: Engine Balance

AutoTech.... When you get the chance, let me know what prices you received on the parts. I'm aware of the dealer cost and the normal dealer markup of the various companies and would like to know which price you received. I just don't think it would be ethical for me to list the wholesale prices here. Contact at ReevesJ32@aol.com

Re: Engine Balance

Autotech - The newest Wiseco piston part number is 3115 and you will need to use bearing kit number B1029. You could change the rods to the 1976 or newer style and then use the standard "larger" E/J wrist pin bearing.

Good luck!
