Engine block removal

Johnson 50 '84, Mod. nr. J50BELCRM<br /><br />I am in the situation where I will have to remove the engine block to inspect and likely replace piston rings. I have the service book for the engine, however, I can not seem to find any information or schematics on how to remove the block. What bolts do I need to remove etc? From what I understand the block is tough to remove, what techniques do you use to separate the block from the rest of the engine?<br /><br />Thank you.

After removing the front and rear covers, there's four screws on each side that attach the power head to the exhaust adapter.<br /><br />c/6<br />Hooty

Pulling the powerhead is a lot simpler than it may seem. You really need a manual to make sure you disconnect and reconnect everything correctly, though. Like most jobs, it's the getting everything ready to do the actual operation that will mess you up.

The 2 nuts in the back underneath the exhaust housing are attached to the Power head with studs. the studs run thru a tapered hole thru the exhaust housing, the dirt and you name it builds up in the holes and for me welded it shut.. when I just pulled My PW I literally pulled the stud right out of the block tearing the block in two and leaving the stud in the housing.. still couldn’t get it out, had to drill it out. block was welded and all is fine. suggest loading that area up with Wd40. did read this in another thread and did the same but NG for me. I did have to kinda pry the PW in that area and that's what ripped it out.
