Engine Cover Disconnects Cables

The engine cover on my newly acquired 1990 Johnson 115 Crossflow Bubbleback V4 has to be put on very carefully from the rear or else it'll disconnect the spark plug and coil wires. I was testing the boat after all the repairs I have been undertaking for 2 months now, and it was nuts. I set the idle speed, and covered the engine and took off and it only did 4300 rpms. I took off the cover and noticed the cover hook had pulled one spark plug wire. I'm on the boat putting the cover in from the front. I fix that and put the cover back on carefully and same thing again, but this time it put three cylinders out of commission pulling spark plug wires or coils wires. I go back and do it again, and it only pulled one. Finally I get it on right, and the engine worked perfectly.

The previous owner had put in the top coil facing the back, so, I changed it back to factory original facing forward, thus hiding those wires, but it is still a tight squeeze with the bottom coils wires on cylinders 3 & 4 which must face back.

Taking the cover off at sea will be a gamble. I'm thinking of covering the wires with a plastic or rubber skirt, or cover the engine cover brackets with the same. Anyone have same experience? Have other suggestions?
