Engine decarbing for sterndrives

probably a stupid question but...here goes

I read the FAQ post about engine decarbing and it seemed to be in regard to outboard engines. Should this process be conducted for I/O sterndrives as well?

You can use Power Tune or Engine Tuner in any gasoline engine to de-carb it, works wonders.

Ayuh,.......... Basically,..... No......

While there may be times when for various reasons it needs doing,.....
It's Not a normal maintance thing to do.......

I'll decarb a motor if I Know I need to pull the Heads, just because it's Way Easier to clean the cylinders Before a tear-down than it is After you've got it torn down...........

The Way I do it is,.........
Warm the motor to operating temp,........
Run it up to a High Idle,...... Say 1200/ 1500rpms,.........
Then slowly pour a pint or so of Water down thru the Carb........Fast enough to cause it to Labor, But Not Stall.......

When the Water is gone,..........
The Combustion Chambers will be as Clean as a New, Unfired motor.............

A little background: This is a boat I just bought and will be doing engine/exhaust/drive maintenance this winter before use next spring.
1995 2150 Striper, 5.0 (carburetor) Volvo Penta SX Cobra

I just happened to read the FAQ on de-carbing of outboards and wondered whether this is something I should do to this engine...especially since I don't really know how it has been run in the past.

Sounds like it is not really necessary for I/O sterndrives but won't hurt anything to do it.

Water makes-STEAM. Steam is a very effective cleaning agent.

BE CAREFUL. Water can also lock up an engine. Water does NOT compress.

It's been a while now, but another member went into a detailed scientific explanation of what happens. "Steam Cleaning" is a simplistic way to look at it. There is a chemical reaction of sorts that takes place and cleans the parts. Slow is the key or like DJ said you risk a hyrolock.

My sis's chevy corsica made a believer out of me. Had a blown head gasket, I pulled the head and one combustion chamber was clean as a whistle like brand new, the gasket had failed between a water jacket and cylinder it stem cleaned that chamber like new.
