I've torn through all of the internets looking for a similar problem to mine. I have a 1982 Cobalt with a 5.7 that I'm refurbishing. So far, new throttle assembly, new shift cables, new interrupt switch, new impeller. But, I still have a problem with shifting. When on the muffs, the outdrive shifts from N - F - N - R - N fine. When I'm on the lake, the engine dies when going R - N. This doesn't make sense to me. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Understand HOW the shift systems works, then you can diagnose it.

I had the replacement switch put in last week. Looking hard to see if the tech replaced the plate.

Something is wrong, most likely with lower shift cable. One great test is to pull the lower cable connection off the linkage at the motor and shift it by hand. It should be butter smooth and take almost no pressure to move.

The spring that allows the kill switch to be activated might have weakened. I've removed mine, stretched the spring to give it more resistance and had luck in that helping my stalling issues.

However, you do need to have the shift system adjusted correctly in the first place.

We replaced the spring-style switch with the "updated" version and plate. I suspect that the adjustment of the cable and position of the plate/switch are the culprits. Hope to get the boat on the lake this next week to try working these out.
