Hi,

I have a late 70's early 80's mercury 115 and my problem is that when I am in the water and put boat in reverse the engine will die. It sometimes will die when I put in forward as well. If I slowly put in gear it will die both forward and reverse. If I put in gear fast forward doesn't die and reverse works sometimes.
I am new to boating, so would appreciate any help!

Oh, it works fine when at the house and hooked to a hose.

Re: engine dies

!st i would check fuel filter and if it has a seperator check that too(it will feel heavy with trash) makes sure the carbs are clean and lastly the fuel pump. The motor should drop rpms once in the water versus being on the muffs so it could just be a idle adjustment. But check all the above first before trying to adjust the carbs

Re: engine dies

Time to clean the carburator, remove and soak it in solvent then replace essential items with a new carb kit

Re: engine dies

Is that something that a novice could do or should I take it in? Are there directions anywhere or anything like that?

If you are slightly mechanically inclined and have a manual then it's a piece of cake
