Engine Does Not Crank - No Tilt/Trim

Boat has been sitting in garage doing some work. Tilt trim and engine crank worked last week. Left key on for a few days. Battery still had power. But engine will not crank and tilt/trim does not work. Charged battery still the same. Shift is in neutral, manipulated in and out of gear several times. All connections to solenoid and starter are tight and no corrosion. New battery same problem. I am suspecting the starter solenoid, ordered new hasn't arrived. Not even a click sound. Just absolutely dead at the key.

I do not see why the tilt/trim would also not work. Is there a fuse I am missing or something else I should also consider?

I believe... T&T relays and selenoid control are fed +12 via the main fuse did you check it ??

where the main batt connects to the selenoid IN side follow the smaller wire (s) attached to the same post .. usually anyway

So I removed solenoid and starter wires to see everything below and thought I found it only to pull up an unused harness connection. Not sure what its for but its defiantly capped with a rubber plug.

Then I read that thread again and started looking by the coil. There is a plastic cover that I removed and an easily accessible 20amp fuse in a red housing was right there.

Can't really tell if the fuse is blown is a pretty small fuse. Ordered a couple. Seems like a good one to have a backup for. Will reply when i get them tomorrow and see if the issue is solved.

You really do need to buy a VOM to check voltages and resistances :)
A volt meter would have told you if 12v passed either side of the fuse
but fuses are cheap .

Thank you for mentioning that. I do have one. I guess I didn't even think to verify the fuse that way cause I fully expected that to be the issue given the symptoms. But really I could have checked for 12v on both sides of the fuse to know if I had an issue before the fuse. Need to start thinking that way more. Scary backyard mechanic... :)

I do appreciate your time and effort. The fuse did resolve the issue and now I have a new solenoid too! I didn't really think the solenoid was the issue but in considering it I realized it was probably a 30 year old solenoid and replacing it could only be a good thing for $15.

Great news and thanks for you positive feedback. we all learn from it.

Yours was a second identical case (bad fuse) in recent weeks

keep that old selenoid in case the " modern" one does not give you 30 years of great service :)
