Engine drops out of gear while throttling up

I've got an '89 Mercruiser V6, about 175 HP, with an Alpha outdrive. This fall when driving it for the last time for the season (of course) it would drop out of gear while accelerating. I had to troll at forward idle for almost a mile to get to the ramp. As soon as I hit 7 or 8 MPH (don't know the RPM) the engine would fall out of gear, but the engine would rev as I had the throttle forward. As soon as I brought the throttle back to complete neutral, I could again kick it into gear and move forward. Any suggestions at all what this might be?

hello
insomnia bites almost as bad as the artheritis that triggers it:).
it sounds like you spun the Hub in the propellor. if the shaft coupler spins it quits all fwd motion and overheats. check the hub and the prob. its quick and easy.
] good luck and keep posting

As rodbolt mentioned, this could be a spun prop...

Are you sure the motor is actually coming out of gear? Are you hearing it actually shift in and out? If not the prop hub may just be losing its grip with the prop causing it to stop turning at higher rpms....Your prop shaft will turn, but the prop won't, which explains how the engine rev's up when you say it "drops out of gear".
Check it out... It will only cost you around $20 for a new hub...

Let us know...

could also be that the shift cable is out of
adjustment. disconnect cable and shift manually.
if this solves problem, it's the cable.
