Engine Installation

I have finished restoring my 18' deep V with a volvo 280 mated to a 350. I took quite a few measurements and some pictures while doing the tear down. The problem is I am not real confident as to where to place my motor mounts. The idea I have is to put the mounts on the engine and lower it into the engine bay. Then mount it to the transome shield and bolt it up, then line up the engine and mark where the mounts should go. I have a tight angle drill so I can drill with the engine in place. Seems to me this would be doable. I do have the diagram with all the measurements, but I am still not confident I would get the mounts in the correct place. I would be dealing with the real world situation rather than theoretical measurements. What do you think?

Your plans is spot on. Once you do get it bolted in, check the alignment again.

What I did with mine, is I replaced the old woodednblock mounts and lag bolts with a 3 inch by 3/8 inch thick Aluminum angle. I knew roughly where the angle should go on the stringers so I drilled them and mounted with with 3 - 7/16 SS bolts right through the stringer. Installed the engine, lined it up and when everything was OK, drilled the bolt holes through the angle for the mounts. Then I adjusted the height. Just take your time, double check everything, install the engine, check again, and then start drilling. Afterwards go have a cold Fernie Brewing Co Lager, that is good beer. If I remember correctly from your previous posts you are from Fernie, right??

Just make sure you have everything aligned (including side to side) BEFORE you drill your holes in the stringers.

Thanks guys. I will make sure on the alignment before I drill any holes. And I think that might be worth 2 Fernie beers for sure as getting the engine in is huge milestone in my total resto. Transom, stringers, floor, faired epoxy coated and painted bottom. Painted hull above the waterline and the deck. Painted bilged. Made a new interior. Lots of new fittings, hardware, gas lines, control cables etc etc. Damn near a new boat. I am afraid to add up all the bills. All with the help and knowledge of the iboats crew to transform a boat greenhorn into a person that knows his boat inside and out.
