As far as the gas tank goes...yes that can be done
A few things to remember....Safety first.....gas fumes mean explosion! Purge the inside with argon or water before cutting!

Not sure but your gas tank for a boat may have to be documented on the repair... like certification for maine use and certification of the repair ect.

I would absolutely make sure that a certified welder is performing this task?again fumes = explosion!

I would think you would have a hard time finding the right tank with the right dimensions that you are looking for.....So having a custom one made is another option.

Or if you find one close...reconfigure your mounting hole in the deck.

If you decide to chop & re-weld the gas tank, or have it done... Make sure to pressure test it before re-installation.... Best way to confirm sound welds, and no pinholes that could soon start to weep...

Thanks for the replys checkmate and jb.I plan to wash gas tank out with soap and water,then fill halfway with water and cut with sawzall and metal blade.Once opened I will clean it out good and take to weld shop.

TJ - Sounds like a plan..... Is the tank ALum or S/S

S/S = Wiz wheel (Cut off wheel .040 thick) on a 4-1/2" angle grinder for the cut.
Alum = I use a circular saw to cut aluminum…works very well and it wont clog up the blade like on a sawzaw.

If it's Alum = no sparks = Good....Clean out with soap and water and make your cut.
Watch it if you are using a grinder to clean up the Alum...it will clog up the grinding wheel and it can explode....so keep an eye on it, I use a scrap pc of metal ( Carbon Steel ) to clean out the Alum on the wheel. They do make a special grinding wheel for Alum.

And as JB was saying...pressure test when completed.

Hey checkmate thanks for all the great advice.The tank is aluminum,I was going to use sawzall because of no sparks,but I will do the circular saw instead and I will definitely pressure test. Thanks again for youre help

BTW using the circular saw mount the blade backwards makes a better cut in the aluminum and will tear it less.

Uhmm, I would NEVER advice using a saw blade Backwards. I know this is a common statement, but IMHO it is NOT valid. A NEW Sharp 40 - 60 tooth Carbide tipped blade used in it's NORMAL fashion will cut the aluminum perfectly. Set the blade so it is barely cutting thru the aluminum.

I have used it that way many times when cutting steel or aluminum with a circular saw. If you think about it it is safer than cutting it forward. A normal wood blade digs in to cut with the mouth of the blade coming into the wood versus reversed it just drags like the way a cutting wheel does. Personally I have a 5" battery powered Circular say I just mount a Grinder Cutting disc to and cut it that way.

Everyone that is considering running a blade backwards should read this....

You are free to do as you wish. Saw blades are not designed to for this usage and can and have come apart doing this. That's why I would never advise it.

WOG good to know, Again like I said I typically use a cutting disc on my Circular saw and you can get 7" ones to go on a standard circular saw.

You can buy carbide tipped bi-metal blades for skill saws and miter saws that will cut nonferrous metals and other materials, or run the carborundum blades for cutting masonry or ferrous metals.

Okay so I am finally going to start my project (weather finally warming up) So now Im trying to get material list together and what I have come up with is 15yds 1.5 csm,10yds 1708,10yds 6" csm tape,2 gal of resin,5qt cabosil,and 2lb of 1/4" chopped fibers. I plan on doing my 2 motor mounts and a bulkhead I had to cut out to remove gas tank. Please bare with on my list I am just trying to make sure I am ordering enough of the right stuff so can anyone tell me if I am going overboard with anything or need more of something. Thank you for any help.

Okay looking for some advice on my gas tank I got the tank cut and was cleaning outside of tank up and found some pitting on the end I did not cut off.So now im looking for some advice on which way to go. Can I have this repaired and if so is it worth it. I found a 55gal plastic tank that is close in dimensions just shorter and I think I can make it work. Is there anything bad about plastic? Thanks in advance for any help

So I started to cut my wood and glue it together today for my motor mounts.Went to home depot got pl construction adhesive and exterior ply.Glued one mount completely together and ran out of glue went back to home depot for more and realized I got pl heavy duty adhesive the first time and not pl premium.So now I got one mount glued with pl heavy duty and one with pl premium.Can anyone tell me if the heavy duty will be good enough or should I go get another sheet of ply and make new one.Thank you for any help

The heavy duty is not rated as waterproof. It's your boat and your choice. Personally I wouldn't use PL at all, I'd glue em up with TiteBond III or Epoxy. If you are going to use the PL then I would use the Premium.

I got my new mounts glued together and ready to go next I will cut the bulkhead and get that in place but I have a question about the part where Im supposed to hold the mounts off the hull.When I do this am i supposed to bed the whole underneath or just on the edges.I attached a picture to understand my question. Could anyone tell me wich way is correct.Sorry for the stupid question just want to make sure I do this right.Thank you for any help
