Engine Only Starts if Hand Cranked

Update: So removed the starter. A massive pain just due to the location under the engine.

Looking at the flywheel, a little surface rust, but all good. Manual said to rotate the crankshaft to inspect all teeth, which I did and no teeth missing/worn.

As you can see the starter was really rusted, and so I thought to just replace the whole thing. Replaced it. Not a difficult job, took about an hour and a bit, and that was mainly spent on cleaning the wires/connections.

Went to start it up, and started straight away. Hopefully it was not just a coincidence, but will update if this changes. Thanks to all that responded especially Furbird

A, ............ you said in your first post

also all the battery terminals, connections and ground on the engine block

So you did not clean all connections, don't think so.

Wow, that's rusty! I bet the starter gear was freezing on the shaft, or the bearings on the shaft are shot. If there's no core on that and you're really interested in learning more, tear it apart. It's already a boat anchor, might as well tear it down and find the failure point.

Yep not a bad idea. Just glad that it doesn't seem to be the flywheel.

alldodge I made a mistake and missed cleaning this. Really don't think it would have made a difference anyway given how rusty the overall starter was. I am no master mechanic, just learning as I go along.

All good, but if you did not say that we would have said start with cleaning all connections. We thought everything was clean and tight. My guess is if you saw it was this bad you would have cleaned before posting

Yup, looking back looks like he only cleaned the slave... Actually curious if that starter works

Has this boat spent time under water? I hope this is bad side of the oil pan. Any oil drips, Danger?

No time underwater. What has happened is the engine cover leaks a little and that is the spot where the water comes down. Going to seal the compartment up. No oil.
