Had boat out for test run today. I have a volvo penta AQ231b. Motor fired right up and ran good after 10 minutes of running one exhuast manifold started getting hot shut motor off. Question is what could cause one side to over heat???

Thank you

Re: engine overheat

Thanks for the reply bondo. I took the water inlet fitting out of the exhuast manifold that was getting hot and it was packed with rust and sludge so I pulled exhuast manifold off and I cleaned all the water channels out with coat hanger and wire brush then used air to blow everything out.I blew through the water inlet and now its wide open. Just waiting to get new gaskets and and exhuast bellow because old one started to melt. My temp guage on boat never went past first line so I am thinking the motor stayed cool just the one exhuast manifold got hot becuase of that blockage. Am i right in thinking this?????

Thank you

Re: engine overheat

I would also look at your raw water pump impeller and the other manifold

Re: engine overheat

Thanks for the input scott. The other manifold stayed cool enough to touch the hole time but I did pull the hose off thermostat housing and blew through it and I can blow through with no effort. Do you think this means the other side should be okay????
Thank you for your help

Re: engine overheat

I have now found that one of the two rubber exhuast hoses that come out of outdrive and turn toward the side has a big hole in it where it comes out. Talked to local marina and mechanic said he wouldnt worry about it because the motor and y-pipe would have to be pulled to fix it. Can anyone tell me if this piece is important and if so where can I find one at .
Thank you

Re: engine overheat

I pulled my thermostat out and the channels in it were clogged....not sure if you have same type setup but, something else to think about in fact I probably need to do what you did and go through and clean out every place water runs through the motor or at least as many as I can reasonably get to.

Re: engine overheat

Yes, those do require pulling the engine and the Y tube to replace them.
Item 29 in this link .http://www.volvopentastore.com/Conn...on_id.856944046--store_id.366--view_id.766695

If you look at the picture below, the flange of the hose marked with the arrows is the actual seal between the transom shield and Y pipe that keeps water from leaking into the boat.

Re: engine overheat

Thank you for your help don. I had a couple of questions about this hose. I think I am able to get that flange back in by working it around would this work or would it probably leak???? And how much would it leak becuase the marina I took it to said he would not worry about the hose at all. Just was trying to figure out what I should do about this. Thank you very much for all your help.
