Re: engine running poorly after warmed

I have a 1990 Malibu 215 euro F3 with a GM 350 (5.7L Blue water skier), serial # D379763. It has a quadrajet carb, mechanical fuel pump, conventional ignition.

Are you sure about having a conventional ignition? Have you pulled the distributor cap off and actually looked for points? Merc stopped using points on V8's back in the early 80's.

Don- I am sure that it is conventional ignition. I have been changing points and condensers on this boat for years as part of regular maintenance.

Any knowledge of installing a Delco EST on this type of set-up?

i'm probably a bit late on this, but just in case; i had the same issue a couple years back on my 91 F3,.. i know the pain you're going thru. Mine turned out to be the grounding wire on the side of the distributor it's about 3" long and was internally corroded. when it got hot, it shorted out and grounded the ignition circuit out.
a 10cent wire and i was chasing gremlins for weeks... good luck.

Well if you have been changing points for years it is time for a dwell meter...

Re: engine running poorly after warmed

Thanks for the late advice. I had been meaning to log back in and tell the success story. I never was able to diagnose exactly what the issue was. I finally got frustrated and did a full ignition replacement to a true electronic ignition. Runs like a top and seemed to pick-up a little bit of power from the hotter ignition. Not too bad all-in-all, paid about $300 for the full kit with distributor, coil, cap, wiring harnesses, etc.
