anyone know what i should do to unseize this engine. its a Volvo AQ145A. I took a breaker bar to the harmonic balancer bolt and could not get it to move. i was told to pull the head and take a BFH and a piece of wood and bang it loose.... not liking the sound of that? anyone else have any other sugestions?

Re: engine seized

Are you sure it is seized ? Could it be hydrolocked ? If there is a possibility there may be water in a cylinder, it would appear seized, but pulling the plugs may enable you to clear the water out and get the engine rotating.

Assuming no water, pull the plugs anyway and put some oil (marval mystery oil ?) in each cylinder and let it set for a day or so. Then try the breaker bar again. Last resort would be to get a pry bar/big screwdriver on the flywheel and pry on the teeth.

Hope you get it loose and the block is OK. But it also could be a failed connecting rod or something very serious. Do you have a history on the problem ??

Re: engine seized

It could also be your drive unit. My Alpha seized up this spring. Thought it was the engine at first; could only turn the harmonic balancer perhaps 1/4 inch, rocking it back and forth. Turned out the drive unit was low on fluid (the reservoir in the engine housing was still full) and had wiped out the upper unit.

Re: engine seized

well, here is what i discovered. I pulled the plugs.... or tried to get em all. I got 3 out but one im gonna have to get the breaker bar on. I looked in the CYL and there is a LOT of SH*T in there. Looks like a nest in there.... So i pulled the exhaust manafold and the radiator. I just got a attachment for my socket so i can pull the head off and really take a look down in there. I got some Marvil Mystery Oil and just dumped it down in the 3 cyl. I will get some pics of what it looks like when i get the heads off. I imagine i might have to drill the plug and then re-tap and put one of those plug heli-coil or timeserts in there. Needs to be gone through. I do not know the history of the engine and in the exhaust its full of nesting and all sorts of stuff.

Re: engine seized

Even if you could eventually turn that engine, it won't last long anyway. A full rebuild is in order.

Re: engine seized

Sounds grim. It probably was sunk or the hull filled with water. I believe it is only scrap metal at this point (!5 to 20 cents per pound).

Take a look on ebay or craigs list to see if you can find a working engine for "haul-away" cost.

I assume you have a boat currently attached to the engine. Is it worth keeping ?

Re: engine seized

if you look under my last thread called what volvo engine is this i have links with pics of the boat in there. it really has a solid hull and its not the worst looking boat that i have worked ok. i am a yamaha certified technician and saw the potential to flip this rig. i got the boat and title for free. even if i dump a little cash into it, it is well worth it to me. i usually throw new power heads onto seized engines but its mostly a project to keep me occupied on my time off. i was planning on getting it machined reguardless but just wanted to get it unseized first.
thanks a ton for the info guys.

Ayuh,.... Is that motor the Volvo overhead cam motor,..??
Or the Chevy motor..??

If Chevy, a reman'll be quicker, easier,+ Cheaper...
If the Volvo, I hear the B motors outa cars are a perfect fit,..?? Never done it though...

Re: engine seized

im pretty sure it the over head cam motor. ripped off the heads and am gonna take em in and see how much it would cost to get a over haul done on em... also, might be interested in just getting another engine and just dropping it in.
