Engine Size?

Restoring a 1971 Larson Lapline 14ft. Had a junk 55hp on it. Took it off and looking for a replacement. I have seen similar boats to this having engine sizes from 35hp to 60hp. Any thoughts on what size would be reasonable? I would like to take kids tubing, but no interest in getting up enough for skiing.
Thanks

Re: Engine Size?

There should be a plate somewhere on it with the maximum HP rating for the boat.

Nope, no engine plate or capacity plate. That's why I'm askin. Anyone out there with a 1971 14ft fiberglass in that engine size range?

Re: Engine Size?

Do you have some pics of this ?

Dont mean to be rude here..but a 71 14' larson restoration + repower..

Have you investigated your floor/trans ?

Might not be worth it... just me though..

Re: Engine Size?

Sorry no picts yet. I posted before picts early last fall. Redid the whole interior. Floor and Transom intact. New Carpet, Seats, Steering wheel, installed a sterio and got the horn and lights working. All I need is an engine and trying to decide if I like the looks better with or without windshield. It's soley a winter project when my cruiser is on blocks, so I'm getting the garage ready soon. Just trying to get input to see if this guy overpowered it or will a 35hp be a dog.

Re: Engine Size?

This will "Kinda" get you close to your HP rating.

The USCG determines the max HP rating for a boat as follows:

1. Multiply length x width at the transom.

2 If Length x Width is.........then max hp is
.........0 - 35.......................3
.......36-39........................5
.......40-42........................7.?
.......43-45........................10
......46-52.........................15

3. Except flat-bottomed hard-chined boats use the next lower rating.

4. If length x width is greater than 52, use this formula:
.......Length x Width x 2 minus 90, rounded up to the next multiple of 5.
............Example: my boat is 15.5 feet by 5.5 feet. 15.5 x 5.5 = 82.25 x 2 = 170.5 - 90 = 80.5
...................the rating plate reads "85 hp".

5. Except if the transom is less than 20" high *or* the motor is tiller steered, in which case:
..........Length x Width x 0.8 minus 25, rounded up to the next multiple of 5.

A boat builder doesn't need USCG approval to rate a boat at or below the USCG formula.

A boat builder can use a higher rating only if the proposed boat/motor combination passes handling tests designed by the USCG.

My experience tells me that a 14' boat of your vintage should NOT go more than 50 hp and would more than likely be very satisfactory with a 35 - 40 hp. I have a 15' 1962 model with a 40 hp Rude' that is just fine.

I'm just sayin...:D

Re: Engine Size?

i have had similar boats, 50hp is right for tubing. 35 will probably plane along with light load but not alot for tubing.

Re: Engine Size?

Thanks all. I'm going for a 50hp. I've been pullin the kids with my 28ft cruiser at about $200 bucks in gas a day. So I figure I'll save a bunch with this combo. Girls just wont have a bathroom:). I'll post picts in spring.

You may be spending more time IN your boat. With no bathroom and girls ;) .

Re: Engine Size?

Well I found a 1972 Chrysler 35hp outboard that matched the color scheme of the boat in question. That was mandatory per the admiral. It was cheap and it runs, so I am gonna set it up and hope for the best come spring. Thanks for the help, I'll let ya know how it goes and post picts when I get it set up in my dads garage this winter.
