engine smoking underneath swim deck

I have a 2005 Milan 210 DX 5.0 MPI Stern drive 140 hrs... We had been on the lake for a few hours, not running it hard sometimes not at all. After wakeboarding for an hour or so I had noticed while I was in the water about to be pulled out that there was smoke coming from underneath the swim deck. Not sure what could be making it smoke. This is the first time its done this, we checked the oil it read normal, there wasn't any film or milky color. The oil gauge on the dash read 40, 80 is max. While it was smoking we opened the engine compartment and there wasn't any visible smoke. I reached my hand down to see if there was any oil beneath the engine. It seemed to be a little slimy but nothing abnormal. I tried to determine where the smoke was coming from but it was tough it just looked like it was building up just underneath the swim deck above the external part of the engine. It seemed to smoke while we engaged the engine just a bit, (speed you go when tightening the rope for a skier).... Any light that can be shed on this problem would be great. Also im not sure if these problem are connected, but when we began to go back in for the day, I slowly started to accelerate and all of sudden the rpms shot up and it seemed not to be grabbing if that makes sense, I noticed my trim was too high so I lowered it, and it did it again but not as bad. We checked for any seaweed in the prop and nothing, we gave it about 5 minutes of just moving slowely, and then punched it and it worked just fine for the rest of the trip. So im not really sure what happened there. Thanks for taking the time to help with this problem.. (FYI we were in fresh water not sure if that helps) Thanks again

What color was this smoke?
Somehow, I would bet it's white, and you are seeing nothing more than steam coming from the hot exhaust into cold water.

Ya its white smoke. I think your right, I asked around and it seems to be nothing more than steam... We just got the boat a couple weeks ago so I wanted to be sure that it was nothing to worry about. Thanks a lot for the response, really appreciate it!

I tend to agree with Don.

I get steam once in a while when doing tow sports while idling to tighten the rope, or coming on to pick up a down skier/wakeboarder.

Cheers
