I am looking for help. My evinrude outboard engine stalls when in low throttle or trying to go forward or reverse. It starts up and runs great on full throttle. Heres the catch...it only does this in the lake. When I hooked up the muffs and hose to the engine in the driveway it ran fine on low throttle and went into forward and resverse and never stalled out. I have tried 3 times. It only does it when I put it in the water. Does anyone have any suggestions?

it will on muffs, as there is no back pressure on the exhaust, set idle in the water not on muffs.

Re: Engine stalling in lake

Welcome to iboats cjammerman!

Poor idle can be caused by several different things. Fouled carbs, link and sync incorrect, poor compression.....can you give us some history on the engine....is this engine new to you, last carb overhaul, any maint history. And posting the year and hp will help.

TD is correct.....engines can run in the drive way and not in the water.

Re: Engine stalling in lake

The engine is a 1974 or 1975 70HP Evinrude outboard. It is not new to me however it has not been run since last year. It has always ran great and has had the gear lube switched every season and has been winterized and well taken care of. I have never had an issue with it. I bought this boat about 8 years ago. To the best of my knowledge it has never had a carb overhaul. I do have someone that is going to look at the carb for me and clean it up to see if that could be the issue.

You might consider a whole tune up. Pump impeller, t-stat, plugs.....decarb. Could put some more years on the engine.

Re: Engine stalling in lake

Thanks for you help! We are gonna try the whole tune up plugs and stuff and clean out the carb really good and try to adjust the idle in the water and see if this helps! I sure hope so...its been a great motor even though it is 30 yrs old!
