Engine starting problem

I have a 1995 evinrude 88 special. I am having problems with it starting when I first start the motor and it will not turn over for awhile. It will almost run the battery dead. And after running for awhile if I turn the motor off it will still take three or four turns of the key to crank it.

Not sure about your engine, but does it have an electric choke? If so, try to flip the orange switch on the selinoid so it is perpendicular to the selinoid. This should manually prime the engine. My 200 was doing the same thing, this seems to make it start right away. I have not tested the selinoid yet, but I suspect it is bad since I can manually prime it.

I dont know about the electric choke. Where would it be?

Generally, pushing in the key while starting engages to choke, or in this case, the primer.

I have a choke when I press in the key. I have tried using this feature but it does not seem to help.

you know you hold the choke in while your turning the key, right? should only need choke for cold starts

Flip the orange switch on the selinoid like posted earlier. See if this will make it start easier. If you are unsure of where it is, mine is on the port side of my engine. Try there

Proper procedure for manually priming that motor is to squeeze the bulb up tight, turn lever on primer solenoid and squeeze the buld one more time. Turn lever back and try to start.

I do all of that every time and it is still tough starting and even after running it will take three to four times to start then after starting i will have to give it some throttle right away or it will stall out.

Sounds like it's time to take it to the shop.<br /><br />You've posted multiple problems here in other post and while we are all happy to help, sometimes you have to spend that $50 to have a professional diagnios what's wrong with your engine. <br /><br />But, to address this post;<br /><br />1) Did you check the battery, (a battery dump test)<br />2) Did you check each cell for proper water level<br />3) are all of your battery connections clean, ( positive and negative )<br />4) are the batteries new and fully charged<br /><br />If it’s not the batteries, or the wire connections, then you need to look at the starter and solenoid. I replace my solenoid every 2 years as preventive maintenance.<br /><br />You can pull your starter and take it to Napa, Auto Zone, etc., and they will bench test it for you.

How does this engine idle once you get it going? Does squirting some premix into the carb help? If so the idle mixture is lean and if this engine has a idle mixture adjustment it needs to be enrichened. Or if it has fixed idle jets they need to be cleaned. What do your plugs look like? Have you checked for spark on all cylinders?
