Engine surges

I just bought a new boat last summer (2004) with a 90HP Mercury outboard. Ran fine until the fall when I noticed it seemed to loose power when running wide open. Ran ok after you backed off a little. Just took it out today and it is worse. Will start to surge about 1/2 to 3/4 throttle but runs fine at lower speeds. Put some injector cleaner and Heet in gas tank but did not help. Any suggestions? Also, the dealer did not say anything about a warranty on the motor. Is there a standard warranty on new Mercs? Thanks.

Re: Engine surges

Yes the boat was winterized. Found my book with a one year warranty. Thanks. I just don't know if I trust the dealer because I had to take it back after one month to get a new battery. The one that came with the boat would not hold a charge. So he swapped it out for a new one.( After he charged me $ 90.00 for his mechanic to tell me that there was no drain on the electrical system and the charging system voltage was ok. He did not bother to test the charging system amperage which can be done with an ammeter of which he did not have.) So four months later I have the same problem with the battery. I bought a new one from someone else. Now back to my question. What could cause the engine to surge like this and should it be covered under the warranty?

Re: Engine surges

Cannot tell you what the problem is or if it is a warrantable problem. If you have a bad stator yes,if you have water in the fuel no.As a side note,I don't remember the last time I looked for amperage output on an outboard,I do look for voltage increase.)

So now you are on your second battery (1st one free with a 'fleecing charge' and second one you bought outright.

We can tell you volumes here about problems, but you need to find a dealer to work with to solve this monetary wise.As well as performance wise.

Let's go boating !

DHP
