Hi, I posted in the wrong forum last night.

I am swapping engines, from a 70's skeebee to a 60;s refurbished Glastron


ANY TIPS would be greatly appreciated.

What can you use for steering cable besides expensive merc wires?

not much info to go on. google telefex steering systems. recommend the no feedback rotary.

Good Morning Tashasdaddy, I know I didn't give much info, sorry.

We swapped it last night but realized as we set the motor on the back of the 70's's Thermoglass (my error to say Glastron before) it sat way lower than it did on the 12'skeebee.
Is the bottom of the motor supposed to sit just a few inches past the bottom of the boat?

the flat plate above the prop is suppose to be even to 1" higher than the bottom of the boat. take a straight edge place it against the bottom of the keel. the AV plate should be in line and 1 to 1 1/2 inches higher, than the top of the straight edge. if you have a long shaft motor on a short shaft boat you may need a jack plate to get it set up correctly.. what motor hp and year are you using.

Putting on a 81 50HP Merc, the boat has it's origonal plate on it and recommends only a 40hp. But it should be ok, read that you can do it just refinforce backing.

We took the back plate off the boat, 2 inch board, and now going to replace it with a higher one, the amount it had to go up a motor riser wouldn't accomodate the lift req'd. THe propeller was sitting 8-10 inches below the bottom!

I am a real NOVICE when it comes to the parts of the motor. I'm not so bad with the parts of the boat, but it takes me some visualizing!
I am going to get the Seloc book from the shed and look for the parts you mentioned! The AV plate.

I will confirm we are sitting that high with new backboard before drilling holes to glue.
Will a 2.5 inch backboard be sufficient thickness to hold the motor? Or should we reinforce with steel plate?

what are you using for the backboard? 3 layer of 3/4 plywood. also fit a piece inside the existing transom only to the top of the existing transom, then thru bolt, thru the backboard, transom and inside piece. this will help distribute the torque and higher push pressure of the engine. use lots of bolts, washer inside and out. hope that was clear. you don't want the bottom of the backboard trying to pull loose.

HEllo, yes using 2x 3/4 and 2 x 1/2 inch boards and screwing all layers too. Total of 2.5 inches.


We have five bolts plus the two for the motor mount holding the backboard on. I think we will put another two to give it more strength.


WOW there is sure alot of GRATIFYING work doing this restoration.


We hope to have it set tonight and bolt it on tomorrow night.

Good Day,
We soon realized that 2.5 inches was too much backboard. Have to re-engineer the thickness.
The existing transom has no rot, then the backboard outside was added after, we are replacing this piece.
I will post a pic if this will co-operate!
I wondered how we were going to bend this thick board slightly around the transom of the boat.... we cut slits in the board, still not enough bend, so now we are going to go thinner and premould before glueing and screwing!

pictures to follow of the existing transome and show you!
Can you imagine how heavy the back end is going to be if I used 2.5 inch wood...
maybe i need some other suggestions to raise the motor up.
