Engine timing

Hello,

Ive got a Seloc manual for my 1985 18XD motor. It basically tells you how to check the timing, but Ive still got afew questions.

1. First check is supposed to be down at full throttle. How is this done safely? I use a large garbage can to test run the motor, but as soon as any forward throttle is given most of the water gets tossed out of the can, causing me to shut down the motor before the water pump cavitates.

2. How do I go about tempoarily installing a tach? Will any tach work?

I probably have afew more questions that I cant remember right now, but thanks for the help.

Cheers.

Re: Engine timing

Also, I guess if anybody has done this before, and has any tips, I would be very appreciative.

Thanks again.

Re: Engine timing

Mark, Normally we test the max advance without the motor actually running. You need to ground out all the plug wires but #1 where the timing light is connected and crank the otor at WOT.

Re: Engine timing

Thanks for the help Chris. That will make things alot easier, and alot safer. I have a manual pull starter for this motor. Will this still work? Can I point the timing light at the flywheel and then just pull the cord repeatedly?

This may sound like a stupid question, but how can I ground out the number 2 plug wire? Can I just remove the plug, reinstall the plug wire on the plug, and ground the plug by letting it rest on the case? Thanks again for the help.

Mark, I may be giving you advice not suitable for your motor. What does the manual say about setting the max advance? I guess I am concerned that the motor may start with one plug removed. You may want to remove and ground both plugs, to assure it won't start. I am also assuming that a timing light will work with your ignition system.

Re: Engine timing

Thanks again for the help.

The ignition system on this motor I believe is the Thunderbolt IV system. It most definitely requires the use of a timing light for the timing procedures.

The manual states opening the throttle, wide open and pointing a timing light at the flywheel. At WOT the 3(cant remember exactly which dots) dots align with the marking on the pull start housing. If they do not, the advance timing rod will need to be made shorter or longer in order to advance or retard the spark accordingly.

Thanks again. I really appreciate the help.
