Engine Warm Up-No Power at First

I've got a Nissan NS90-A, but I assume this is a 'genera' problem.

When I first start my boat, it wants to die. I have to re-start it a few times before it will idle.

Once I try to put it into gear, I have to give it a good bit of gas or else it will die.

Once I am moving, and I get out of the no-wake zone and open it up...it seems like it is running at half throttle for a while...then all of the sudden you can feel it 'wake up', and it takes off...

What could be causing this? I know for a fact that all 3 cylinders are reading 115psi for compression, when warmed up. I am not sure of what they are when cold (I was told to measure when the engine is warm).

I have only run the boat 10-15times, and have never let gas sit in it for more then 4weeks. I always pull the fuel line just as I get into the no wake zone, and run the fuel out once it's on the trailer.

The motor is a 1995, and I just bought it 6months ago, so I am not sure of the previous maintenance.

It runs like a champ when it is warm. Starts on the first crank and gets full power whenever you romp on it.

The only other problem that I have with it is that if I let it idle for an extended period of time (30minutes), or do a lot of low speed cruising (when I'm catching bait w/the cast net), it will some times hesitate once I finally try to get on it, and it smokes a little more then usual. I assume this is due to excessive oil from idling too long? Any ideas?

I assume it needs the carbs cleaned, which will be done this winter, and maybe even needs them synched.

Let me know if you have any ideas.

Thanks!
Shawn

Sounds like you are on the right track with cleaning the carbs. I would start there and see how it does. I do not know about the carb settings on a Nissan, but I assume that they have an idle speed jet and that may need to be adjusted. Pull them apart and clean them, reassemble them and set to original specs and then adjust to propper iddle rpm from there.
Good luck and keep postn'.
Knightgang

KnightGang,

I have tried to adjust the idle out with the throttle cable/rod mechanism, and it doesn't help much. I bet it does have something to do with the idle jets, like you are saying.

What's funny is how it idles/runs perfectly once it is warm...?

I will look into it a bit more this weekend if the weather is nicer and I get a chance to head towards the lake.

Thanks!
Shawn

If you would put winter gas in it it will
desolve the vanish in your carb.
and litte set for about 2 to 3 weeks.
But to me it sound like your jet needs
to beadjusted and a big high speed jet put in.
Rex

45Red,

I will pull the plugs this weekend. I am guessing they will need to be replaced. Like I said, I haven't had it long. I got it at a great price and haven't put any more $$ into it since because I am saving for a new boat. I do plan to do an impeller, plugs, and a carb cleaning this off-season...
($400 with a 3blad SS prop and a 4blade SS prop, controls, etc, ready to run)

Thanks
shawn

Remember the starting procedure.

1. Push and hold key in to choke and advance throttle 1/3-1/2 way.

2. Keeping hand on throttle, turn key, and as soon as engine fires up, reduce throttle to about 1100-1300 rpm, release choke (key back).

3. After about 10 seconds, RPM's will start to raise, at this point bring throttle back all the way. Should run at idle speed.

4. Always allow motor to warm up for 2 minutes. (It seems forever!)

Unfortunately/fortunately, those engines are simple with no electronics to control anything other than the spark. Thus it is like starting an old '40's or '50's automobile. Ofcourse, that just means that is much less stuff that can break or malfunction.

Good luck.

Don't under-rate that motor because you got it cheap. Do the maintenance,it's a good sound design.

One thing about my engine/controls.

I can't rev the engine in neutral. I have to put it in gear to move the throttle...is there a way around this?

I used to warm up my dad's old boat by giving it a little gas to keep it running at first, and then back down on it, like you said...but this one wont free-rev in neutral.

Nissan NS90-A model...stock controls, as far as I can tell.

Thanks!
Shawn

Here is a link to an online owners manual for your engine. You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view it. It shows the type of control you should have with your motor. If there is no warmup lever, there should be a release on the control lever to allow throttle up without engaging gears.. (a button in the shift arm)
There is also a trouble shooting section you might find helpful!
web page

Guys, just realized there WAS a fast idle lever.

Apparently it was broken off at one point. I always wondered what that missing space was on the control box...I feel like an idiot, live and learn I guess. Starts up first time, and warms up great now...full power after a few minutes of warm up, no problems.

Thanks!
shawn
