I have a 1995 Silverton 361 express with twin Crusader 454 XLIs' My problem is that my stbd check engine light keeps comming on at pretty much the same RPM everytime. I accelerate to cruiseing speed. According to what I have read several things could cause this, but the most likely thing I see is the alternator voltage is low. Below 13v. I thought the guage was just flakey, but now I'm thinking it more close to right. Does anyone know what the cruising speed should be, and at what RPM? I believe my Tachs are off also. They show 27-28 mph (GPS speed) at 4200-4400 RPM. Engines are Rated at 4500 max. The original boat owner says it will run over 30 mph all day, and the port engine has still got plenty of pickup after the stbd engine cuts my power back on fault. Any Ideas guys?

Re: Engine warning light.

I would start with new plugs, wires, fuel filters and fuel/water seperators.. thats a cheap easy place to start (be sure to change carb fuel filters if carburated)

Re: Engine warning light.

I'm In process of that this weekend. Its fuel injected though. The flame arrestor was nasty and I cleaned those, but I bought the wrong plugs, and will have to wait till next weekend. Will keep informed. THX

Re: Engine warning light.

Also since your Flame Arrestor was "nasty", you may want to check your PCV valves and hoses (if equiped - not sure on newer engines).

One other suggestion. You may want to try some spay engine tuner. It's an areosol spray, you spray directly into the carb (or intake manifold for FI).. you empty the 1 can per engine, and let it stall (similiar to fogging for winter storage). Let it soak for 3-12 hours, then restart engines, and run for a while at dock to clean out.

I have OMC 5.7/350 (carburated) and I do this twice a season, and each time, it makes a world of a difference on cabrutrated, but I imagine it would do just as well on FI.

OMC makes the Engine Tuner I use, but I believe QuickSilver makes one too.. check you local boat service centre.. they should have it.
