Engine will not start, carb problem???

1960 Evinrude Fastwin 15 I just took my carb apart and cleaned it. It had sat for six years and the float and needle were gummed up. It will try to start sometimes (1 out of ten trys mabe) but will not stay running. I tried starting spray and it fired right over. <br /><br />The carb has two adjusting nobs, one has numbers and the other is a wing nut (I am assuming it is a quick fix). I am sure I just don't have these adjusted right. Gas is also shooting out of the top left side of the carb out of a hole next to the end of the top adjusting knob. Towards the valve side not the knob itself.<br /><br />This is my first outboard and I have no clue what I am doing. Any help would be great. Thankx

You need a shop manual and an operators manual. You may have screwed something up or you may have simply not fixed anything.<br /><br />From what you say, you have a sticking float and plugged or misadjusted jets.<br /><br />If you can get the float unstuck, so that fuel doesn't squirt out of your carb, turn both jet screws in (CW) until they GENTLY seat, then back each out about 1-1/4 turn and try again.<br /><br />Let us know what you find, but DON'T mess with anything without a manual.

What JB said.<br /><br />At this point, we can't advise whether it's fuel,ignition,or compression problem.<br />But the fuel comming from that hole is a clue that the float needle is not shutting the supply of fuel off once the bowl is full. This can be caused by a sunk, float ajustment, or the needle itself is stuck,and not going up to shut it off.<br /><br />Until your book arives, do as JB instructed. After that, try thumping the bowl gently with a screwdriver handle,while you (or better yet,someone else) squeezes the primer bulb.If the fuel stops squirting out, it was a stuck needle,and you might not have to remove the carb.<br />Make sure your gas is fresh,and the tank and fuel lines are spottlessly clean. One drop of water or goo in such a small carb,and it'll never start.<br />Good luck, and let us know how you do.

Clean the fuel system better. Take the jets out and probe them with a small wire and carb cleaner spray. Any varnish like old fuel left in tank or lines will make it's way back to the carb. Thanks for the help. The problem is solved, somewhat. I just didn't have the needle settings set correctly. Now I just need to fine tune them to keep the engine running smooth. I also got some bad info and had WAY too much oil mixed in the gas. I know I need a manual but I did not want to spend the $35 until I knew it would run. I bought the '14 boat, trailer, and the motor for only $225. I did not even know the motor came with it until I paid the boat off.
