Hi all. I have a 20hp Johnson Model J20CRCTE She starts and runs beautifully. When trying to kill the engine I had to press the kill switch button harder and harder till eventually it would not shut off. I replaced the kill switch to no avail. Cleaned all the grounds and connections to the coils and still will not shut down. I need help LOL

Hi
What years that?
Might be powerpack failure, are you choking to kill it?

I bought the engine well used. I believe it is a 1981 or there abouts. Yes I have been choking it out to stop but I am sure this is not good for the engine

Re: engine will not stop

So long as you have idled down and you hit the choke i dont think it is bad for the engine, it just lubes up the sparkplugs a bit so may make starting a bit harder next time. Someone will say if its not good for it. A bit of extra lube in the bearings and all that while its sitting isnt a bad thing
I guess you need to weigh up whether you want to replace the powerpack as i cant think of anything else it can be but i also cant find a 20hp 1981ish motor to see if theres anything else you could try.
Does it have a powerpack?

I don't know if it has a power pack or not. It is a manual start. I read a post some place that the model J20CRCTE suggests it is a 1983

Check your model # again. It doesn't jibe with anything I looked up.

I rechecked model number and it is as I said I was J20CRCTE It is built in Canada if that makes a difference.

wires from the kill switch leads into a harness that goes to each coil and to grounds on the chassi. all of which I have cleaned and re cleaned.

this is the post I read about my model#
Welcome to iboats.

That model number decodes like this:

J=Johnson
20=HP
C=Canadian
R=Rope start
CT=1983 model
E=run number (of no consequence except to parts guy)

I think you read it properly, unless there was something special about the Canadian model

If it's got a power pack on it look for the black/yellow wire coming out of it. It sounds like it has an open between the pack and the stop switch.

I dont think ive seen a kill switch grounding to a coil before, its normally well upstream from that so you arent dealing with high voltage.
Can you post a few pics so everyone can see if yours has a powerpack and maybe what model it is. 1983 ish didnt even do a 20hp

I have tried to post some pics but for some reason this page will not allow me to. The engine does have a power pack. I cross referenced the part number, They are not cheap. Does the power pack burn out slowly or does it burn out all at once?

Re: engine will not stop

Stop-switch has two wires, one to ground and one to CD box. If switch is tested good, and ground wire is good/connected, then the cd box has a faulty kill circuit. Choking motor to stop won't hurt anything.. and you may be able to back off the idle stop so you can just throttle back until it quits (like they were before stop-switches were added). New cd box will solve if you don't mind the $$.

Good luck!

Lots of good used parts available in Ontario.--Depends on your location.--Choking it to stop does no harm whatsoever.

Amen to that. Consider that In the 50's, there was NO shutoff switch on the motors.
To stop the engines - you guessed it - engage the choke.

I had the same problem with my 1990 25hp motor. I managed to figure out that the connector on the black/yellow (kill switch) wire was not making contact.
I bypassed that and it worked, I will try to find a picture of it.

Thanks You ALL for your knowledge and input. One more question. Other than shutting down the engine what does the power pack do? If it serves for other reasons such as to keep the engine running then I will replace the power pack.

Re: engine will not stop

The powerpack might be called " the heart of the ignition system "-----When you short it out it stops sending signals to the coils and there is no spark.
