Engine wont go into Neutral or Reverse

Hi<br /><br />I have this '72 125hp Johnson that was given to me. Who knows how long it waws sitting in my uncle tools shed before I got it, but he claims it ran when he last took it off his boat. After examining it, you can tell mice had made it their home for a while. I allowed my brother-in-law to hitch it to my boat and he "Fixed" all the wires the mice chewed. After all the other maintence I did, this engine doesn't go into Reverse, or Neutral. I beleive there's and electric switch that would allow the engine to switch gears, Can anyone help me figure out this problem? I got an manual from the local Library to help me figure this out, but I can't find it in there.

Is the motor running when you try to go into reverse of neutral? It has to be before it will shift.<br /><br />What are you using for a shift switch now?

Yes, When I start it the prop is turning...

Sorry Handley didn't see the second part of your Question. As of right now, I'm not using anything to shift gears. The most I can do is slow down. To Clearify my answer before, Yes the engine is running.

If you dont have any kind of shift switch, how do you expect it to change gears?
