Outdrive wont lift.. I would be shocked if it was something else besides this shotty wiring patch.. Is there a way to jump it to test ?

I dropped it down and it started to come up then stopped.
I used the electrical switch and I can hear it click at the electrical relays that I'm assuming engange the lift but all I heard was a click so when I took off the cap I saw the people that had the boat previousley that rigged everything instead of fixing it right was a bunch of electrical wires holding things together.. I took pictures can someone please explain to me how to resolve this..

Re: Engine won't Lift up.

I recomend pulling the unit, cleaning and greasing the worm drive and bench testing your electrical relays, cleaning corrosion. There is a schmatic in the volvo service manual, but that is at my workshop, and i am not there now. I believe cleaning the worm drive should free everything up.

Well I went out and worked on it somemore to try and understand whats going on so here goes.

Flipping the switch each of the relays click and are working as I had one 12v trouble light on each side. Now the blue center piece looks like a some kind of toggle and as the worm gear comes up it flips over the toggle and the leg stops..Now I did get it to move at one point somehow and it seems like the worm gear is up even though the leg is down.

Im not sure how it engages the leg to come up I don't even know if the worm gear is up and the leg is down which it is can i make the worm gear go back down to then pick up the leg??

I WAS REALLY HOPING TO go out with my family on the water.. PLEASE HELP.. ANYONE..

The vice rod (worm gear) pushes down through the transom shield to tilt up the outdrive. You can jump the motor to bypass the black box. The blue switch is a limit switch to prevent damaging the housing.

Have a look at this, it may be of some help.

Well after 12+ hours of work a sun burn and some drinks I tested the relays they work no problem even though they are old they are still working good. Took apart the worm gear not that difficault as I would have thought regreased everything and cleaned and painted it. I noticed when I had the motor seperate from the worm gear when I wiggled the wire all of the sudden the motor worked.. I opened the motor and well to my surprise who ever had the boat previousley jerry rigged the wire and the magnet. **** me off.. The other piece broken and taped together was the Limiter switch ( Hartmann F 49 )

Atleast it broke when the boat was high and dry and not out on a big fishing trip..

Motor: AB Electrolux made in Sweden
KS3448/290 12v
75 12

Questions 1: Can I use a two wire motor instead of a 3 wire.?
Where can I get these parts ???

Is there something I can use instead ?

From your pictures it looks like the limit switch (blue) is broken, it requies a normally closed connection across the contacts to allow the motor to work. The limit switch prevents the worm drive from pushing the shaft through the top of the housing.

Replacing the switch should solve your problem, and obviously while its apart a good service is always good. :)

Re: Engine won't Lift up.

Ok I got everything back together and the warning light acts in the wrong way when the leg is down the light goes ON because the worm gear goes up to the top.

How do I flip that so when the leg is up the light is on ??

This is driving me nutz..

No, you need it. You'll break the housing if you bypass it.

Sounds like it's wired wrong...

^^^^^ +1

You say you have a three wire motor, the diagram shown above apears to be for a four wire motor. I fought with my old 4 wire for three years before going to a two wire. Same story, broken brush holders poorly soldered connections $100 rebuild kit later I still had a slow lift, A new two wire was less than $150 and has been basically trouble free for several years.

Wow thanks Steve.. Much simpler looking it like that I appreciate it.. Not to be too noisey but I can see from the pic other diagrams in the backgroud.. Got any other good ones ?

I think the "background" is the next page of my manual bleeding through. I just noted the terminal numbers etc. Cheap paper? My motor rebuild failed too. I guess the magnets lose their strength after 30 years or so. Two wire diagram in the lower right. It was a drop-in replacement. Worked great for a coupla years until my "blue switch" bit it. Boats........gotta love'm.
