Engine won't run with throttle plates closed

Should the engine run if the throttle plates are closed? I'm asking because all I've read indicates to adjust air fuel when throttle plates are closed, also did link sync and ended up with closed throttle plates, looking down the carburetor bore I can see reliefs cut into the throttle plates so even when they are closed to the stops there's still a place for fuel to go by them, I've had to adjust the throttle cable to keep them open a bit to get an idle does that sound normal? It's an 67 v4 80hp.

They need to close to be right. Off hand, my guess is that your belt timing is off a notch. Idle happens with the plates closed and idle rpm is determined by spark advance/retard.

Thanks and thats where I'm moving to next, the belt timing. It makes sense now, that stop we talked about earlier on the distributor, anything less that thumb screw fully screwed out using all the threads and she'l stall, do you think that too fortifies the belt a tooth off? I guess all I have to now is search the forum for some info on where all the timing marks are and at wht point they align.

A sheared flywheel key will put it out of time also.
