Engine wont start

We have a 1984 Johnson GT 150. This week while fishing, the engine made a different sound maybe a miss, the next morning, it started, put in nuteral, engine died, would not start again. Engine backfires when trying to start. 2 mechanics said carbs w/junk. Cleaned the carbs w/cleaner, didn't help, changed plugs, wont start, checked compression, all had 85 lbs, removed carbs, cleaned all 6, no start. If this was an auto engine, I would say it has jumped time. Engine is firing. Sounds like it's firing too quick. Mechanics say it couldn't jump time. This engine was built at the end of 1983 and is a cross between an '83 and '84. Anyone have any ideas? Need help.

Squirt some mix gas in the intake and see if it fires off. If it does it's a fuel problem.

If it's just backfiring when the key is released I would suspect ignition component failure.

It could be way out of timing if the flywheel key has sheared.

Re: Engine wont start

It is backfiring while the engine is turning over. It seems to load up with fuel, then backfires. Then you keep on cranking and it will finally backfire again. It backfires intermittently. We're going to pull the fly wheel and see if it sheered the key. I wonder if there is a module that we don't know about that may have gone bad? This engine runs like a top and has never given us a minutes trouble beyond the usual things that have to be replaced, so it really has us stimied.
