Engine Won't Stop

I have a 1978 Evinrude 85 hp V4. I just bought the engine and it starts fine but after running for about 5-10 minutes the engine will not stop after turning the ignition off. I need to choke the engine to get it to stop. I have only run the engine a few times due to other repairs that I had to make (replace Water Pump assembly and themostat assembly) I was told when buying the boat (1975 Starcraft American 15') that this problem existed.

I just had the same problem with my 1979 evinrude 55hp. Mine ended up being a bad pin in the wiring harness. Not sure if you have the evinrude service manual but in it there is a test that you can run to determine if the key switch is bad or the wiring. On my engine the kill switch was the black/yellow wire so you may want to start there.

I also had the same problem, '77 140 Johnson, mine ended up being the starter solenoid.
