i am trying to rebuild my 140 hp mercruiser the boat is a 69, but the parts house said they didn't make a 140 hp in 69, so i have my serial # 2770087 356 84, if anyone knows how to decode it, all help is greatly appreciated.
They go buy the serial # when you order them there really is no year

Even in my much newer 3.0 LX there are MANY SMALL CHANGES that require useing the # to get the correct part

tommays
That year of manufacture might be the last 2 digits of the boats hull ID number, but not of Mercruisers serial numbers for his engine.
The serial number for his engine is 2770087 which is consistant with a 68 or 69 engine. Have no idea what the 356 and 84 came from. Where did you find all those number?
Here is the model and SN list from the Merc electronics parts catalog.

thanks for the info, i wonder why he told me they didn't make a 140 hp in 69? oh well,. Those other numbers are stamped right next to the first numbers on the block Don S. well let me give this a try thanks again.
