Is there anyway to tell what year a johnson 150 is without the serial number plate? thanks

If you can find the model number or give a part number off the power pack it can be looked up.

where would the model number be located? i found this # 3183632 on the block

well the standard place the model # is located, is the same plate that the serial # is most prominatley displayed. On the transom bracket.

the model # should start with a J150, unless it is from europe or part of a boat dealer package when new.

show us a picture and i bet we can narrow it down...

I can't find anything with a J150 before it. under the cowling it has a 99 on it. the engine has a 8 pin red connector in the engine. I am not sure if this was added as I got the boat whie it was under going a re wire vro disconnect.

found one here J150PLEES does the EE mean 99 then? power pack is 585219 i think

What year is your Stratos? Likely your motor is a year older or same year. Reason I say this is most Stratos boats came factory rigged with Johnson's. That was their standard motor, all else were upgrades.

the boat is a 99. i don't know why the serial number plate is gone I got the boat at auction. that j150 number is from the cowl it's self. should that j150 number be anywhere else on the engine that 585219 is off the rectifer i think. not the power pack

that black tag under the large OMC letters cast into the stern bracket is what you need to look for to see your serial # AND your MODEL NUMBER

the MODEL # will start with J150XXXX

the year of the boat does us no good...people take motors off and replace them..you could have a 2010 motor or a 1970 motor on your 1999 boat!

So i just looked up the rectifier number on ebay and the 585219 part number is for a 1995 rectifier yet my cowl says J150PLEES I don't get whats going on here lol

your motor is a 1999, and the rectifier for your motor is 0586048, and it is used on 150 and 175 hp motors from 1996 until 2007!!

I just took this pic of my rectifer with the part number attached On ebay this part number only goes to 95. 96 and up is the part number you provided. the cowl number is
J150PLEES So i am a little confused on the year of my engine.

It's likely a 99. They do use same parts for a series of years. The reason I had asked was to narrow it down. Being your boat is a 99 also I'm positive it's equipped with the original motor and likely would be a 98/99. I'd still look on the block for the second tag to try to find your serial number. Unfortunately since it came from an auction it likely didn't have that info with it.

Wouldn't the rectifier have the 96-2007 part number on it if it were a 99? The boat was a repo and the wiring is a complete mess and I have no history on it. I would think by the rectifier part number coming back to the 1995 model that it's a 95 or are you saying a 95 rectifer would be used on the 99 model?

well it is possible someone burnt up the original rectifier...( i know i burnt one up!) and they installed what the could find...and it worked

I have a 1995 115 hp ocean runner...when i fried my rectifier I went over to my 1997 eveinrude ocean pro that was dissasembled at the time and grabbed its rectifier....the only difference was... the plugs were different....one had a Duetch plug on it the other didnt...I cut the plug ends off and wired in the original plug from my 1995...motor has been running for three years now!!!

the wireing changed on the 1996 models...the factory went away with the old big red plug that had all the wires in it to go from the controls to the motor. They went with a series of pigtails, maybe three that plugged in and did the same thing...

thats why they invented the 'adapter harnesses" so you could plug in a pre 95 motor into a post 96 control... and a harness that allowed you to plug in a post 96 motor to a pre 95 control!!


IT IS entirely possible that someone put a 95 or older powerhead onto your 1999 motor!!!

id check the wires going to your rectifier to see if they have been spliced, like i did mine

Ahh that makes more sense. My engine has the big red plug in it. the only part that says 99 is the cowling everything else points to 95. I think they might have changed the entire wiring harness to the red plug system. Do i treat it as a 95 when ordering parts? Also did you have to remove your flywheel to remove your rectifier? grey wire coming from rectifier goes to my tach if i'm correct? thanks.

you could probably find a freeze out plug and see if it matches the serial # of the tag on the stern bracket. but it probably has had the power head replaced...so IF thats the case....Id look at ordering stuff for your power head as a 95 ...i dont think they made a 60 degree looper V4 until 1995. your paint scheme is screaming 1999!! same for the graphics....looks super clean...

you have any pictures of the power head?

you do not have to take the flywheel off to get at the rectifier....just a few plastic covers behind the flywheel....maybe even only the one on top...( four screws). youll need a new gasket....bob

does your rectifier have a plug like this??

this one came out of my 1995 115 ocean runner.

the 1997 had a 2 pin rectangle plug!!

the 1997 models dont have the purple wire... I think i spliced it into one of the other wires

EDIT:I think I am wrong about the purple wire, now i am remembering that the gray and purple wire are for the tach signal, on the post 96 models they have their own duetch plug.and the yellow, and yellow/gray wires have their own plug.

Thats the same rectifier. I am thinking the same thing the power head has been changed along with the harness. i am having trouble hooking up the tach and the trim gauges. Do I just run a wire from the tach "s" to the gray rectifier wire? find the trim sender and wire it to the gauge? Also for hooking up an engine temp gauge will i just run it to the tan wires coming from the cylinder heads? the wires just don't seem to be in the harness. not sure if that pic helps at all. it's a v6 looper 60 degree 150. the engine was painted and new stickers on it. thanks again
