Saturday my Merc started making a new noise...

It seems that the starter is coming up and sometimes drops down.

It eventually starts. Over 2 days it has gone on and off. Last fishing trip out before leaving and it started in 3 seconds. Then after starting her to take her to the launch it took over a minute.

Is this a sign of my starter going? I would hate to be fishing and head for shore only to have my engine not start. Can U buy a pull-start cord for this motor for emergencies?

Re: Engine

not sure about your model, but most of them came from the factory with a pull cord and you should keep one for emergencies like a dead battery. some had them taped up inside the cowl so it was there when you needed it. reminds me, i should replace cord on mine, its 40 years old and would probably break on first pull. was just a rope on a handle with a knot in the end for you to wrap around and pull

Well.. I have lots of rope and cable around. I will make one up as soon as possible before my next trip out. I am not sure wy the engine isn;t starting all the time... maybe I will post a video of it with the casing off. The little starter wheel pops up and then sometimes it lets go and drops down.. resulting in that noise it is making.

on a car starter, basically the same, that happens when the starter drive gets weak and can turn backwards allowing it to jump out of drive position. small block chevys ate these up all the time

Scrobo, when the gear on the top of the starter, also known as the bendix, kicks out (drops back down), is the starter motor still turning? If it is then it's time to replace the bendix.

Yes. will post a video today. When the little gear drops down you still get a whinning spin noise. So I believe the starter comes up.. turns.. then the gear drops down but the starter is still turning.

I will post a video very very very soon

Ok. Hooked up the earmuffs and turned on the hose :)

The damn thign tried to make a liar out of me! It took a few minutes to get it to do it... But near the end you will see the starter gear drop and the starter motor continues to whine.

Wish I had a vid with the cover off before. But like I said. Sometimes it does it alot.. sometimes it make me a liar. :)
